Pulmonary Edema
The term “pulmonary” is a word that is used to indicate the lungs and there are a number of medical conditions that can affect the lungs including pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolisms, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary fibrosis. All of the latter issues can be identified by the symptoms that accompany the conditions as well as the implementation of a pulmonary function test. If an individual experiences respiratory issues, a pulmonary function test can assist physicians in identifying the cause or underlying pulmonary condition.

Pulmonary edema is an issue where the lungs begin to accumulate fluid in spaces just outside of the lung’s blood vessels: an issue that arises when the left ventricle of one’s heart fails to pump correctly. Pulmonary edema proves to be a condition that accompanies disorders of the heart, and is one of the first symptoms of heart disease. A pulmonary embolism is an issue where a blood clot forms in one of the lungs or both; the blood clot often travels from other areas of the body and ends up in the lungs where it remains and blocks off the blood supply to the lung where the blood clot winds up. Pulmonary Hypertension is an issue where the amount of pressure within pulmonary arteries increases; symptoms can include things like fatigue, pain in the chest area, a racing heart, and shortness of breath. Meanwhile, pulmonary fibrosis is an issue where the individual’s lung tissue becomes scarred; scarring can be brought on by various issues including exposure to environmental toxins, infections, and certain diseases.
